Top 5 Books Read in 2014

As 2014 draws to a close, I wanted to share with you my top 5 books that I have read this year. It will be a mixture of Christian and Fiction books as I like to read both. If you fancy buying the book yourself, you can click on the picture of the book which will take you to Amazon.co.uk.*

Let me know what your top 5 books are in 2014 in the comments below!

1. The Ocean at the End of the Lane – Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman is rapidly becoming one of my favourite authors, being the writer of the story “Stardust” he tends to write fantasy books with a deep imagination. The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a dark fantasy with a rich plot that will get your head spinning! It’s a short book about a boy who meets a girl on a farm down the end of the lane, fast becoming friends he soon realises that her family is not ordinary. Furthermore something evil has invited itself into his house, invading his family and he must battle with it!

2. For their Rock is Not as Our Rock – Dan Strange

A Christian book written by Dan Strange asking the question “Where did the other gods come from?”. He takes us on an exploration of the Old Testament to see what they worshipped, what took them away from the one true God and why. It also poses the question of what Atheism can teach us and how idolatry is easily spread. A tricky read in places, but something to get your teeth into. It’s not too academic but it is meaty!

3. iGods – Craig Detweiler

Looking at the digital world, Craig Detweiler explores the rise of companies in the digital age and how they have impacted the world. This includes, Apple and Google and social media. The question he wrestles with is how these virtual worlds affect our spiritual world and is it doing any harm to us at all.

I have done a review of this book here: iGods

4. Enders Game – Orson Scott Card

If you have seen the film then you will enjoy the book as it fills in all the gaps the film left. This is a sci-fi book which calls into question what morality is. Ender faces huge challenges and brings into question who the true enemy is.

Here is an article I wrote about the film Ender’s Game

5. Christ Our Life – Mike Reeves

This is the second book in Mike Reeves Trilogy looking at who God is: Trinity – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This is a rich book about Christ that will help remind you of who Christ is and what he has done for you. If you want to seek a deeper understanding of who Christ is, in an easy to read way, then this book is for you.
